Defending champions Russia secured top spot in Group B of the 2017 European Sitting Volleyball Championships women’s event in Poreč today.

Having recorded three straight victories, the Russian team were seeking to maintain their unbeaten record at the Inter Sport Zelena Laguna in the Croatian city.

They dominated throughout their tie against The Netherlands, storming to a 25-12, 25-12, 25-12 victory.

The result ensured them of top spot in the group, with Ukraine progressing in second place after a 3-0 straight set win over Italy.

It saw them finish with three wins and one loss to their name, with the only blip on their record coming against Russia.

The Netherlands finished third with two wins and two losses, while Italy and Germany finished fourth and fifth respectively in the group.

Finland maintained their 100 per cent record in Group A by securing a 25-18, 25-5, 25-24 success against Croatia, consigning the hosts to finishing bottom of the group without a victory to their name.

Slovenia overcame Hungary in straight sets to finish in second place.

Group winners Russia and Finland automatically advanced to the quarter-final stage of the tournament.

Russia will take on the victors of the tie between Slovenia and The Netherlands.

Defending men’s champions Bosnia and Herzegovina won 3-0 against Serbia to win Group B, assuring them of a place in the quarter-finals.

They will be joined by Croatia, confirmed as Group A winners yesterday.

Russia won in straight sets against The Netherlands in Group C to clinch a last eight spot, while Ukraine claimed a thrilling 3-2 win over Germany to win Group D.

A draw is scheduled to take place to decide their quarter-final opponents, with group runners-up Poland, Serbia, The Netherlands and Germany awaiting their fate.
